the installation is part of an ongoing series titled Oceans Apart that investigates the relationship between borders and identity. seen in juxtaposition to the widening gulf between polarising sentiments in Cyprus, the sea is contemplated as an enveloping presence that does not adhere to ideological boundaries.
video works comprised of personal and archival footage are projected onto a diaphanous developable surface and permeate through the space, switching between concealing and revealing memories. emanating from opposite directions in the space, the projections create a convergence of distorted and blended visuals, while a layered mix of archival sounds and ambient sonic elements designed by Marina Ashioti and Rafailia Tsiridou (Endrosia) mimics the ebb and flow movement of the tide.
ebb and flow inverts and folds the conflicting positions of the north and south coasts of the island, allowing them to be faced with each other, pulsating one against the other. much like the sea, the confluence of memory embodies the push and pull between opposing beliefs. the synthesis at play blurs boundaries of difference, creating a way of seeing that brings the fluid and indeterminable nature of identity to the foreground.
special thanks to Mia Stavridou, Rafaelia Scoutella and Marina Ashioti.
